Electronic Navigation

“Electronic Navigation for Small Craft”

Look beyond the screen, verify your electronic data, and maintain the “safety-first” mindset that separates a passenger from a captain.

This course is the perfect complement to traditional navigation training (like ASA105), giving you a hybrid skillset that keeps you safe when technology encounters its limits. What You’ll Master

  • The Tools of the Trade: Gain a clear understanding of the differences between installed chart plotters, tablet-based apps (like Navionics), and handheld GPS units—and learn which setup fits your boating style best.
  • Pro-Level Planning: Learn to create, edit, and review complex routes from your “couch” at home. We cover everything from manual routing to automatically generated paths, including critical hazard checking.
  • The Art of “Watchkeeping”: Learn to avoid “screen fixation.” We’ll teach you how to integrate your digital displays with 360° visual scanning and traditional steering techniques.
  • Emergency Readiness: Gain peace of mind. We cover what to do when electronics fail, how to effectively use the MOB (Man Overboard) button, and how to safely revert to traditional dead reckoning when the power goes out.
  • Understanding Your Data: Demystify depth soundings, tidal heights, current information, and cross-track error (CTE) so you can make informed decisions in real-time.

Don’t just follow a line on a screen.

Know where you are, where you’re going, and how to get there safely.
