Grenadines Sailing Vacation

Suggested Itinerary

Fly out of the Bay Area Thursday evening, April 18 to arrive in St. Vincent Friday evening after transferring in San Juan. Board boats at the Sunsail charter base.

Saturday - Chart and boat briefings, check out the boats and head out for the night's anchorage in Admiralty Bay in Bequia. There are good restaurants and interesting shops ashore.

Sunday - Sail to the Tobago Cays. Anchor behind the horseshoe reef. Local "boat boys" will greet us and offer service for deliveries of fresh fish, bread, fruit, etc. There are four tiny islands in the anchorage. This is where Capt. Sparrow (Johnny Depp) was put ashore in "Pirates of the Caribbean."

Monday/Tuesday - There are dinghy moorings over the reef for the best snorkeling in the caribbean. Check out the beaches on the uninhabited islets nearby or arrange a scuba dive..

Wednesday - Chatham Bay at Union Island is another unspoiled anchorage with excellent snorkeling and peaceful surroundings.

Thursday - Stop by Charleston Bay at Canouan Island. This is where Moorings is located and a good place to refresh supplies like water and ice. The local resort is called the Tammerind Club and has good pizza baked in a wood fired oven.

Friday - Sail to Bequia, explore the shops and sights. See scrimshaw and elaborate model boats and other crafts.

Saturday - Return boats to the Sunsail base by 10 a.m.. Check in to hotel, dinner at base or in town.

Sunday - Return flight to the Bay Area to arrive Sunday evening.

Windward Antilles Bareboat Flotilla  (PDF)

April 18- 28, 2013

The Grenadines consists of a cluster of small islands between St. Vincent and Grenada. These islands are the most delightful and have some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in all of the Antilles. The Spinnaker Sailing group will be chartering out of St. Vincent which is just a biscuit toss from the heart of the Grenadines, one of the most undeveloped and unspoiled of the bareboat chartering areas in the Caribbean. This is also where the movie, "Pirates of the Caribbean" was filmed.

At the northern end of the Grenadines about 8 miles from the Sunsail Charter base in St. Vincent is Bequia, known as the Island of Fishermen. The model boats carved here are known around the world. Just south of Bequia is Mustique, a quiet enclave of the rich and famous. The Tobago Cays make up a coral atoll where the richness of the reefs must be seen to be believed.

Join us as an individual, couple or put together your own group to fill your own boat.

If you have your own group and can act as skipper, you may charter your own boat and join the flotilla. You can choose the size of boat and other options. Contact Bob at Spinnaker for information about cost and availability for doing your own boat. You can also book your own private cruise through Spinnaker Sailing for charters with sunsail or The Moorings.

The Boats

Our group will use the latest model (less than 2 years old) 43' Beneteau yachts equipped with 4 double staterooms. We limit the number of people to keep it comfortable for everybody no matter the size boat..

snorkeling in the Grenadines

Diving in the Grenadines

This part of the Caribbean is well known for spectacular snorkeling and diving. The Tobago Cays contain about the best snorkeling anywhere. A vast horseshoe reef about three Miles long rises out of a depth of only 10 or 12 feet. The reef protects a large open anchoring area with firm holding in white san inside the horseshoe. Corals on the reef grow in abundant variety in the crystal clear water as schools of fish browse among the coral heads and sea fans. There is a turtle sanctuary where you can snorkel with the turtles.

Certified divers can take advantage of diving services in Bequia and around the Tobago Cays. Bequia has several excellent diving areas that include caves and boulders along the outer shores of Admiralty Bay and a nice drift/wall dive at Pigeon Island nearby. Diving also takes place on the outer part of Horseshoe Reef and around Worlds End Reef. The dive services offer diving from their own boats and will give experienced snorkelers the opportunity of doing supervised scuba diving for the first time.

Bareboat Charter Certification

Certification is available to Basic Coastal Cruising graduates who have acted as skipper at least 3 times. It's important each student gets used to the responsibility of skippering a boat before Bareboat Charter certification is attempted. The cost is $400.00 extra for text book, certification fee, testing and instruction. Bareboat charter graduates can do their own bareboat cruising in The Caribbean or other locations around the world.
