Spinnaker Handling

This course teaches you how to use the grand daddy of them all, the spinnaker sail.  Used primarily in racing, the spinnaker sail adds performance and speed.  If you're interested in racing this is a must class for you.  This 4 day class teaches you all the equipment, different types of spinnakers, how to pack, hoist, set, gybe, trim and douse the spinnaker. Using the spinnaker can add tremendous exhilaration to your sailing.
Prerequisite - Basic Coastal Cruising or equivalent & experience as skipper.

Basic Coastal Cruising Review!

Haven't been sailing in a while? Feel a bit rusty? This one day class is a review of basic sailing fundamentals and goes over a lot of the material already learned in the Basic Keelboat Sailing and Basic Coastal Cruising classes. Most of the lesson is on the water with lots of hands on practice time.

Celestial Navigation !

Learn how to find your position anywhere in the world using a few techniques, some tools and simple math. This course will prepare you to navigate using the marine sextant. You will learn how to adjust the sextant and take shots of the sun, moon, planets and stars. You will also learn how to do sight reduction, i.e., taking the altitude reading from the sextant, the time from a chronometer, and an assumed position and finding your position. Don't be afraid, only simple math is required. All of the homework problems and answers, and excerpts from the Gray text and the Burch text are on the CD's which will be provided. By the end of the course you will be prepared to sit for the ASA 107 Celestial Naviagation certification exam (although this is not mandatory.) Practice use of the sextant will be done ashore near the classroom, but also on an optional sail outside the Gate.

Docking for ASA Endorsement (118)


This one-day course is for up to 4 students interested in gaining theoretical knowledge as well as extensive practical experience maneuvering a Diesel inboard powered sailboat under power. The course is designed to give each student confidence in his or her ability to maneuver and dock in a variety of situations and to provide the ASA Docking Endorsement certification.

Ashore knowledge includes: the forces that act on a boat during docking maneuvers and their affects. Use of mooring lines in a slip and alongside, use of spring lines, procedures and crewmember duties, and safety.

Underway skills include: assessment of conditions, crew preparation, standing turn maneuvers, docking stern in and bow in with various wind directions relative to the slip, differing methods of tying up, heaving a line, and Med-tying.

The class meets from 9:30 to 4:30 with a morning classroom session and an afternoon on the water session. The afternoon portion provides lots of practical experience maneuvering and docking a single screw, Diesel inboard powered sailboat.

Instructor: Bob Diamond (Spinnaker Sailing School) is a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Master and ASA certified Advanced Coastal Cruising Instructor Evaluator who has been teaching sailing full time since 1984.
