Sailing Classes

As an American Sailing Association affilliate our courses are designed to give students internationally recognized ASA certification for the various levels of achievement. Successful completion of these courses qualify students to operate boats and equipment as outlined. The following list of classes are being offerred from our Redwood City Marina location. ASA certification classes are to be taken in order as follows: 1- Basic Keelboat Sailing, 2- Basic Coastal Cruising, 3- Bareboat Chartering.

product image Basic Keelboat Sailing 1

Prerequisites:
None. No sailing experience required.

Description: This is the first half of the Basic Keelboat certification course. It can also be taken as an introduction to sailing. This course runs 9:30 to 4:30 for 2 consecutive days. There is 2 hours of classroom instruction from 9:30am to 11:30 am with a break for lunch followed by 4 hours on the water sailing instruction. This class includes all course handouts and study materials. In this class you'll learn terminology, nomenclature, sail theory, sail trim, points of sail, tacking and jibing, steering, wind recognition, motoring and docking, setting up and putting away the boat, knots, safety, teamwork and more. Maximum 4 students per boat.

Prerequisites:
Basic Keelboat Sailing 1.

Description: The final two days of the Basic Keelboat Sailing certification course. This course prepares students for the written and practical tests that are a part of the ASA Basic Keelboat Certification . This course continues to build on the skills learned in Basic Keelboat 1 and and includes addtional fundamentals and practical skills that include, right away rules, aids to navigation, man overboard drills, use of spring lines, motoring and docking, safety teamwork and more. Successful completion gives students ASA Basic Keelboat certification (101). A one year membership in the ASA is also included with certification. Basic Keelboat Certification or equivalent experience is a pre-requisite for the Basic Coastal Cruising course.

Prerequisites: None. No sailing experience required.

Description: Basic Keelboat 1 and 2 are combined into a 4 day course. This 4 day class is held from 9:30 to 4:30 each day and generally runs Saturday and Sunday for 2 weekends or Monday through Thursday midweek. Weekend classes can be split between alternate weekends if necessary. This class includes ASA text, supplemental handouts, certification and 1 year membership with the American Sailing Association.

Prerequisites: ASA 101 Certification.

Description: A four day class that prepares students to skipper boats up to 30 feet on San Francisco Bay and around the world. This class includes: Review of basic sailing skills and fundamentals, safety equipment, skipper and crew responsibilities, check out / check in procedures, anchoring, understanding weather, heavy weather sailing, tides and currents, sail area reduction, destination sailing, person overboard drills, downwind sailing using a whisker pole and preventer, safety, teamwork and more. Group classes run from 9:30am to 4:30am with a break for lunch. Maximum of 4 students per boat. Successful completion of this course gets you ASA certification (103) Basic Coastal Cruising.

Prerequisites: ASA 101, 103, 10? Certification and some skippering experience.

Description: This is a 4 day class that is held Saturday and Sunday for two weekends and is designed to qualify students to skipper boats 30 to 50 ft. It includes: Familiarization with ships systems, inboard diesel engine, on board plumbing, 12 volt electrical systems, VHF radio, use of propane stove, motoring and docking, towing a dinghy, anchoring, safety equipment, skipper / crew responsibilities, person overboard drills, downwind sailing, sailing a compass course, destination sail with an overnight stay onboard, living afloat, safety, teamwork and more. With this course you will learn to sail, motor, and dock and operate larger boats. The classes are held entirely on the boat. Upon successful completion you'll receive ASA certification for Bareboat Chartering.

Prerequisites: ASA 101, 103, 10? Certification and some skippering experience.

Description: You sill get the same certification as our normal Bareboat Charter class, but you will get all of your sailing instruction on one of our group sailing vacations. Enjoy multi-tasking as you sail in an exotic location, anchor in beautiful coves, cook and clean in a beautiful yacht. If you sign up for one of our overseas sailing vacations and you have Basic Coastal Cruising certification we can put you on a yacht that one of our instructors is skippering and he can show you everything you need to know to pass the course as you go around and do everything that is covered in the certification course, and have a memorable time doing it.

Description: This course teaches you the basics of navigation. Learn how to read charts, plot courses, do danger bearings, running fixes, time, speed and distance problems and more. This class is taught on six consecutive Thursday evenings from 7pm to 10pm. All classes are all held in the classroom. Included are: Charts, parallel rulers, dividers and a Chart of San Francisco Bay.

Description:The course is designed to enhance your confidence and your ability to maneuver and dock a sailboat in a variety of situations. Successful completion of this class earns you the ASA Docking Endorsement certification. A one-day course for up to 4 students interested in gaining theoretical knowledge as well as extensive practical experience maneuvering a diesel inboard powered sailboat under power. This lesson runs from 9:30am to 4:30pm with a break for lunch.

Prerequisites: Basic Keelboat Sailing Certification

Description: Learn how to find your position anywhere in the world using a few techniques, some tools and simple math. This course will prepare you to navigate using the sextant. You will learn how to adjust the sextant and take shots of the sun, moon, planets and stars. You will also learn how to do sight reduction, i.e., taking the altitude reading from the sextant, the time from a chronometer, and an assumed position and finding your position. This class is held once a week for six consecutive evenings from 7:00pm to 10:00pm. All classes are held in the classroom. The standard text book for this class is Dutton's Navigation and Plotting. Also needed is the Starfinder 2102 D. If you have them already, great. If you need them you can either order them yourself, or we can get them for you for an additional $100

Description:This course teaches you how to use the grand daddy of them all, the spinnaker sail. Used primarily in racing, the spinnaker sail adds performance and speed. If you're interested in racing this class is recommended for you. This 4 day class teaches you all the equipment, types of spinnakers, packing, hoisting, setting, gybing, trimming and taking down (dousing) the spinnaker. The class runs from 9:30am to 4:30pm each day with a break for lunch.
Pre-requisite - Basic Coastal Cruising or equivalent & experience as skipper.

Description: This two hour class is a primer for Bareboat charter. You will go over the correct usage of the electrical systems, head, VHF radio and do lots of motoring and docking of a larger boat with a wehhl for steering and an inboard diesel engine.This class is done all on the boat, so there will be lots of hands on experience with this class. Call to schedule your lesson. Basic Coastal Cruising certification is a pre-requisite.

Description:This class introduces students to sailing at night. This class runs once per month from 6:00pm to midnight. In this class you'll leave the dock at 6:00pm and sail up the Bay toward San Francisco using navigation aides, and landmarks to safely navigate. You also experience the night sailing conditions on the Bay. Required and proper use of running lights and other navigational lights will also be covered. Basic Coastal Cruising certification is a pre-requisite.

Description:
These courses are the basic keelboat and basic coastal cruising classes designed with kids in mind. There are two levels of Sailing Camps. The first level is our Basic Keelboat sailing course and the second is our Basic Coastal Cruising course. Certification is optional and additional. Classes run from 9:30am to 4:30pm Monday thru Friday with an hour break for lunch. No sailing experience is necessary and the students do not have to know how to swim.

Description:
Private instruction is available for anyone not able to attend the regularly scheduled classes or needing extra time to work on specific skills. Certification testing is also available. Private lessons are priced on an hourly basis but varies depending on the boat used and the number of people. Private instruction is also available on your own boat.
