If you do not have ASA or USSailing certification at the appropriate level and the appropriate experience to go with it, you will have to do a check out test before you can charter any sailboats at Spinnaker Sailing. The only exception is an extensive charter history that can be verified. The purpose of the test is not to try to disqualify you but simply to make sure you will be competent and confident to sail in the conditions of the southern San Francisco Bay.
The check-out procedure consists of a written test and an on-the-water evaluation. The written test should take no longer than an hour and contains general questions about nomenclature, safety, points of sail, precautions for sailing upwind and downwind in gusty wind, crew overboard procedures, hypothermia, lateral system of buoyage, rules of the road, sail set, sail selection, weather helm, anchoring, lee shore hazard, grounding, and procedures. The on-the-water check consists of set-up, docking and handling the boat under power, getting sails up and down, reefing, crew overboard recovery, tacking, gybing, safety, and break-down. Once you complete the check-out, your name will be entered in our database and you will be able to charter boats similar to the kind used in your check-out.
The regular private instruction rates apply to on the water check-outs. This ranges from $71/hour for a Santana-22 on a weekday to $124/hour for the Hunter 33 on a weekend. Two hours should be enough time to complete the check even if you need a little brushing up. Click Here for a more complete list of private instruction rates. Of course ALL Spinnaker Sailing Basic Coastal Cruising Graduates are qualified to charter boats under 30'.
It is not necessary to have an appointment for the written portion, but an appointment is necessary for the on-the-water evaluation. The written portion should be completed first. ASA (American Sailing Association) certification is available. This national certification is helpful if you are going to be chartering at other locations. Talk to us about fees and extra requirements for ASA certification.
Please don't hesitate to ask us if you have any questions about check-out or certification requirements.
