| What is apparent wind? |
Whatever wind you are feeling on a moving platform be it a boat, bike, skateboatd, running... usually referring to direction but can also refer to speed as well. eg: while riding on a boat you feel the wind coming 15 degrees over the port bow at about 12 knots. This is apparent wind as true wind can only be observed from a stationery platform. |
| If boats are so much heavier than water, how do they float? |
Boats not only carry wood, fiberglass, canvas and such, they also carry vastly more amounts of air, which is much lighter than water. Think of a bottle floating on a pool. The bottle when full of water will sink, but empty it is full of air which enables it to float. |
| What is Hull Speed? |
The maximum speed with which a displacement boat may move through the water. This is usually a mathematical calculation of 1.34 times the square root of the length of the boat at the waterline. |
